The town of Hartbeespoort was named after Hendrik Schoeman, a Boer General who fought in the Anglo-Boer War and also owner of the farm that the Hartbeespoort Dam was built on.

Hartbeespoort is Afrikaans and means ‘gateway of the antelopes’ this name is collectively used for the smaller towns of Meerhof, Ifafi, Melodie, Kosmos and Schoemansville situated around the Hartbeespoort Dam.

The small resort town of Hartbeespoort falls under the Madibeng Municipality; the town is also known as ‘Harties’.
