To some sections of the African population particularly those reeling from economic problems, visiting a gym is deemed a luxury even though its significant role in enhancing physical fitness is as clear as day.
However, financial incapacitation should not spell doom to fitness enthusiasts who cannot afford the monthly gym subscriptions.

Sandbag Weights for Dumbbells
A dumbbell is a piece of equipment used in weight training either individually or in pairs, with one in each hand. It is a priceless apparatus for joint-isolation exercises such as biceps curls, chest flyes or shoulder raises. Others prefer dumbbells for weightlifting. However, in the absence of dumbbells, one can improvise with sandbag weights. These can be created by filling two strong plastic bags with equal amounts of sand the use string or duct tape to seal the contents of the bag. When done, one can now hoist the sandbag weights like a dumbbell.
Small Mattress for Sit-Ups Bench
The sit-up is an abdominal endurance training exercise to strengthen and tone the abdominal muscles. It is similar to a crunch, but sit-ups have a fuller range of motion and condition additional muscles. Sit-ups are usually ideal for people who want to lose belly fat or those who just want to maintain perfect abs. In a gym, one can use the sit-ups bench to strengthen multiple unique muscle groups, both in the abdomen and throughout the body. In the home however, the absence of a sit-up bench does not mean this type of exercise cannot be carried out. To work on belly fat in the home one needs to get a small mattress or a carpet, provided it is clean. Once this is acquired, one can proceed to do sit ups by lying down on the mattress facing upwards while clutching the outside of his or her ears. Unfortunately, one cannot get the option to shift between incline or decline sit-ups using a mattress but at least, one gets to maintain beautiful abs.
Broomstick and water bottles for DIY Barbell
A barbell is yet another type of exercise equipment used in weight training, bodybuilding, weightlifting and powerlifting, consisting of a long bar, usually with weights attached at each end. People usually use it to work on their shoulders or just for pressing and squats. When at home, one can create a personal barbell using a broomstick and two water bottles. Firstly, the water bottles need to be filled with water and placed at the extreme end of the broomstick. To avoid weight shifting during workout, tie socks on both sides of each water bottle to keep them in place. Once done, proceed to lift the barbell and do exercises in the comfort of your own home.
Kitchen/Bathroom Countertop for Push-up Bench
Most homes do have a countertop that is the right height for a push-up. The countertop may be found either in the kitchen or the bathroom. For incline pushups, place both hands on the countertop, and extend the legs at an angle. Proceed to do your pushups leaning down into the counter and pushing back up. For decline pushups, place your legs on the countertop and proceed to do your pushups.
